How to Open an .md File
An .md file is a plain-text Markdown document. The fastest way to open one is in your browser — drag it into a viewer and read the formatted version, or open it in any text editor to see the raw source.
What an .md file actually is
Markdown is a lightweight way to format plain text. A .md file is just text with a few conventions: # for headings, **bold**, - for lists, backticks for code. Nothing is hidden and nothing is proprietary — which is exactly why developers, documentation teams and AI agents all use it. (More: What is an .md file?)
Option 1 — Open it in your browser (recommended)
The quickest route, and it needs no software at all:
- Open the file in VS Code (or another editor with a Markdown preview).
- Use the preview shortcut (
Ctrl+Shift+V/Cmd+Shift+V) or paste the contents into GitHub. - Read the formatted document — headings, tables and code blocks all render.
Why this is usually the best option: you see the file as intended, not as a wall of ## symbols. It works on any operating system, including Chromebooks and tablets, and there's nothing to install or update.
Option 2 — Open it on Windows
- Notepad — right-click the file → Open with → Notepad. You'll see the raw text; formatting shows as
#,**,-. - VS Code — open the file, then
Ctrl+Shift+Vfor a rendered preview side by side with the source. Best choice if you'll edit it. - Word / WordPad — not recommended. They don't understand Markdown; you'll get an unformatted wall of text with the syntax marks intact.
Option 3 — Open it on macOS
- TextEdit — opens
.mdas plain text. Use Format → Make Plain Text first so it doesn't try to add rich-text formatting. - VS Code — same
Cmd+Shift+Vpreview as Windows. - Xcode — opens
.mdfiles with a basic rendered view; handy if you're already in it.
Option 4 — Open it on Linux
- Any text editor — Gedit, Kate, Mousepad — shows the source.
- VS Code or another editor with a Markdown preview gives you the rendered view.
- Terminal users:
less file.mdreads it raw;glow file.mdrenders it nicely in the terminal if you have it.
Option 5 — Open it on your phone
- iPhone — the Files app previews some
.mdfiles; for reliable rendering, paste the content into a browser-based viewer. - Android — open with any text editor, or paste into the viewer.
- Dedicated Markdown apps work too, but for a one-off read a browser tab is faster.
Why does my .md file look like plain text with # and *?
You're seeing the source, which is the point of Markdown — the file is readable without any special software. Those characters are the formatting instructions:
| You see | It renders as |
|---|---|
# Title | a top-level heading |
**bold** | bold |
- item | a bullet list |
`code` | inline code |
[text](url) | a link |
Any viewer, editor preview, or site like GitHub renders it into a formatted document.
Frequently asked questions
Can I open an .md file in Word?
Not natively — Word treats it as plain text and shows the syntax. Convert it to .docx or PDF first, or read it in a Markdown viewer.
Is opening an .md file safe?
Yes. An .md file is plain text; it can't run code or install anything. Treat it like a .txt file.
How do I convert an .md file to PDF? Open a rendered preview and use your browser or editor Print → Save as PDF.
Why is my formatting lost when I copy from the preview? Copying the rendered view loses the Markdown syntax. Copy from the source pane instead, or download the raw file.
How do I create an .md file?
Any text editor: write the text, save it with a .md extension. That's it — no special software required.
